Mathematics, in addition to its indisputable value as a science in itself and its importance in the general development of human knowledge, are essential in the development of a great variety of scientific and technological disciplines. Virtually all branches of human knowledge make use of mathematical models. In recent decades, beyond its classical applications to Physics and Engineering, it has highlighted its contribution to areas of knowledge in the field of Social Sciences or Health, in which traditionally its applications were not usual.

The main objective of the doctoral program in Mathematics is to train specialized researchers in this fundamental branch of knowledge, both for its intrinsic interest and for its potential capacity for application in other areas.

The program has a general character, attending to the quality research training in all the areas of specialty of Mathematics, both in its basic and applied aspects. It is designed to provide students with the level of specialized training required to develop a research career in Mathematics, both in academic environments and in research, development and innovation centers in the field of industry and new technologies.

Access requirements

The pre-enrolment is the process by which a candidate applies for the admission to a doctoral programme.

The requirements that the applicant must meet to be admitted are regulated by the Spanish Royal Decree 99/2011. Please note that the information shown here is just a summary. If you have any doubts, please contact the Doctorate School.

Specific information for candidates outside the EHEA.

The pre-enrolment process is completely online. If you do not have a UPV user you will have to request one as a first step of the application. At the end of the pre-enrolment process you must upload a PDF copy of the required documentation. The originals (or certified / legalized copies) will be required later, after the official enrolment is done.

The Academic Commission of the requested doctoral program will study the application and in case of needing additional information, will contact the candidate. According to the Doctoral School’s Services Charter the deadline for resolving applications (duly submitted) is 45 days.

The enrolment is annual (by academic year) and, as in any other degree, must be renewed obligatorily during all the doctoral study period.

Access requirements for new students

Bachelor degree + masters degree, with a total of 300 ECTS (minimum) and of which at least 60 ECTS must be master level.

Degree of five years (or more) of previous plans (engineer, licensee, architect, ...) with an equivalence to master degrees.

Degrees from outside the EHEA with an equivalence to master degrees (must provide a certificate issued by the university of origin stating that the degree gives access to doctoral studies in the home country).

Other Requirements

A PDF copy of the following documentation will be asked to complete a pre-enrolment in a doctoral programme:

• Copy of an identification document (European ID, Passport, NIE, DNI).
  For those who provide a copy of the passport, they must provide, as soon as possible, a copy of the N.I.E (Identification Number for foreigners) to be provided by the competent Spanish administration.
• Degree and Academic Certificate (transcript of records) of all studies that are accredited to justify the access requirements (master and bachelor degrees)
  Not necessary for studies carried out at the UPV
• Currículum vitae, together with any other documentation proving merits.
• Each doctoral program may establish as additional requirement the need to provide specific documentation: proposal of a research plan, proposal of thesis director, etc.
  Check previously the section corresponding to each doctoral program.
• If the Master's degree is from outside the EHEA, a certificate issued by the home university indicating that these studies give access to doctoral studies in that country.

Copy of this documentation will be uploaded to the UPV server through the same pre-enrolment application (as a last step of the pre enrolment process). The format must be 1 PDF file per document.

Doctorate in Mathematics

1. The admission process of doctoral candidates to the Doctoral Programme in Mathematics will be carried out by the Academic Committee of the same. Those students who have completed the credits corresponding to the INVESTMAT Interuniversity Master's Degree and have submitted their Final Master's Dissertation will be able to join the doctoral programme. In the same way, access to the doctoral programme will be granted to those students who hold the Advanced Studies Diploma obtained in the doctoral programmes of Royal Decree 778/1998 "Multidisciplinary Mathematics" of the Department of Applied Mathematics of the UPV and the "Interdepartmental Doctoral Programme” of the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Valencia.
2. Students who have completed a number of credits equivalent to the INVESTMAT Master's Degree in other master’s degrees (60 ECTS), both Spanish and foreign, in the field of ​​mathematics or who come from other doctoral programmes, will also have access to both national and international doctoral programmes (Royal Decree 778/1998), provided that the Academic Committee issues a favourable report. Said Committee will request the information on the students’ prior educational background and will make an admission proposal, establishing the mentoring activities that it deems appropriate.
3. Students will be selected using academic excellence criteria and agreements between the origin and target universities. The following specific weighted criteria will be applied:
   • The academic record in the degree and master's degrees, or equivalents, prior to the doctoral programme (60%).
   • Assessment of the motivation and interest letter presented by the student and its adaptation to the research lines of the programme (30%).
   • Other merits (10%)
4. The Academic Committee of the Programme may require that students who access having completed master's degree not included in the area of ​​mathematics perform complementary training. Such complementary training will be selected from the offer made by the Master's Degree in Mathematical Research.
5. The recommended entry profile for the Doctoral Program in Mathematics is that of graduates, engineers or graduates who hold a master's degree in the area of mathematics, with research orientation. Of the master's degrees offered by the Universitat Politècnica de València and the Universitat de València, the MA in Mathematical Investigation, also inter-university, fully fits this income profile.
