Presentation (Doctorate in Building Engineering )

The main objective of the Doctoral Programme in Building Engineering of the Polytechnic Univesity of Valencia is to train PhDs in the field of construction (civil engineering, building and industrial construction). The aim is to train researchers and highly qualified professionals in the following areas:

• The sustainability of buildings through the development of new materials and the recovery of waste.
• The monitoring and maintenance of buildings, including the analysis of their pathologies.
• The analysis of the safety of structures against earthquakes and fires.
• The development of new methods for the project and calculation of constructions.
• The design of structures using optimisation techniques and the development of predictive models applied to structural concrete.
• The management of innovation and health and safety in the field of construction.

The main objective of the Doctoral Programme in Building Engineering of the Polytechnic Univesity of Valencia is to train PhDs in the field of construction (civil engineering, building and industrial construction). 

Access requirements

The pre-enrolment is the process by which a candidate applies for the admission to a doctoral programme.

The requirements that the applicant must meet to be admitted are regulated by the Spanish Royal Decree 99/2011. Please note that the information shown here is just a summary. If you have any doubts, please contact the Doctorate School.

Specific information for candidates outside the EHEA.

The pre-enrolment process is completely online. If you do not have a UPV user you will have to request one as a first step of the application. At the end of the pre-enrolment process you must upload a PDF copy of the required documentation. The originals (or certified / legalized copies) will be required later, after the official enrolment is done.

The Academic Commission of the requested doctoral program will study the application and in case of needing additional information, will contact the candidate. According to the Doctoral School’s Services Charter the deadline for resolving applications (duly submitted) is 45 days.

The enrolment is annual (by academic year) and, as in any other degree, must be renewed obligatorily during all the doctoral study period.

Access requirements for new students

Bachelor degree + masters degree, with a total of 300 ECTS (minimum) and of which at least 60 ECTS must be master level.

Degree of five years (or more) of previous plans (engineer, licensee, architect, ...) with an equivalence to master degrees.

Degrees from outside the EHEA with an equivalence to master degrees (must provide a certificate issued by the university of origin stating that the degree gives access to doctoral studies in the home country).

Other Requirements

A PDF copy of the following documentation will be asked to complete a pre-enrolment in a doctoral programme:

• Copy of an identification document (European ID, Passport, NIE, DNI).
  For those who provide a copy of the passport, they must provide, as soon as possible, a copy of the N.I.E (Identification Number for foreigners) to be provided by the competent Spanish administration.
• Degree and Academic Certificate (transcript of records) of all studies that are accredited to justify the access requirements (master and bachelor degrees).
  Not necessary for studies carried out at the UPV
• Currículum vitae, together with any other documentation proving merits.
• Each doctoral program may establish as additional requirement the need to provide specific documentation: proposal of a research plan, proposal of thesis director, etc.
  Check previously the section corresponding to each doctoral program.
• If the Master's degree is from outside the EHEA, a certificate issued by the home university indicating that these studies give access to doctoral studies in that country.

Copy of this documentation will be uploaded to the UPV server through the same pre-enrolment application (as a last step of the pre enrolment process). The format must be 1 PDF file per document.

In order to join the Doctoral Programme, prior knowledge similar to that obtained in Spanish university degrees is required, specifically that related to the area of ​​materials (such as a Degree in Materials Engineer or a Degree in Chemical Sciences) or construction engineering and architecture (as, for example, a Degree in Architecture, Technical Architecture or Civil Engineering) in any of the following areas:

• Analysis and design of structures.
• Rehabilitation of structures.
• Design and optimisation of construction system structures.
• Construction management systems.
• Chemistry of construction materials.

Besides, it is necessary to acquire the level of knowledge and competences achieved by taking one of the three following university Master's degrees taught at the Universitat Politècnica de València:

In the event that the student comes from other Official Postgraduate Programmes or from other studies with a level of education equivalent to that of the official Spanish Master's Degree, the similarity of the acquired competences will be assessed by the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme with the competences foreseen in the abovementioned Master’s degrees. In these cases, the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme will make a report based on:

• The postgraduate academic record of the applicant.
• The personal curriculum of the applicant.
• Professional merits and research in the field of Construction Engineering by the applicant.

When necessary, the report will outline the need for the student to take some subjects of the Master’s degrees of the Postgraduate Programme. Likewise, the research lines of the Programme in which the doctoral student may participate will be listed. It is worth noting that, given the wide variety student profiles who request admission to the Programme, it is not possible to give general information on the possible necessary complementary training, which should be defined by the Academic Committee of the Programme in each particular case.

The number of ECTS, contents, assessment systems and learning outcomes of each of the subjects covered by the Master's degrees associated with the Doctoral Programme are included in their respective teaching guides that are available on their website. There are two main languages ​​in the Programme: Spanish and English. The recommended proficiency levels for these languages, in accordance with the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" are C-1 for Spanish and B-1 for English.

The admission of students to the Programme shall be carried out by the Academic Committee of the Programme and shall be done with the following criteria:

• Academic record, in which both the marks obtained and the affinity of the courses taken with the research lines of the Doctoral Programme will be assessed. This section will be assessed with a maximum of 8 points out of 10.
• Professional merits and research carried out in the field of Construction Engineering. This section will be assessed with a maximum of 1 point out of 10.
• Duly accredited knowledge of a foreign language ​​(mainly English). This section will be assessed with a maximum of 1 point out of 10.

A minimum score of 5 points must be achieved in order to be accepted to the programme.
